When and where was Swami Vivekananda born ?

Swami Vivekananda was one of the great religious gurus of the world.  Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 in Calcutta (Kolkata).  His great father's name was Vishwanath and mother's name was Bhuvaneshwari Dutta.  In childhood he was called Vesvara aka 'Baile'.  When he went to school, his name in school was Narendranath Dutt.
 Narendra read many books of literature, history, philosophy and science during his school life.  He successfully passed the entrance exam.  In 1884 he done B.A.  For some time he also studied 'Vidhi' but due to the death of his father, he had to earn his living.  He made his living by teaching at the Metropolitan School.  From the very beginning, Narendranath was fond of 'meditation'.  He used to meditate from time to time.  This was the initial symptom, indicating that one day he would become a great saint.

 That turn of change came in his life when he met Shri Ramakrishna for the first time.  At the first meeting, both of them felt magnetized attraction towards each other.  Narendranath saw some unique things in Ramakrishna. Narendranath accepted Ramakrishna as his guru.  Ramakrishna showed him the divine path.  He followed the ideals and teachings of his guru.  After that he became Vivekananda.  Vivekananda came to know the truth through meditation in Kanyakumari.  Swami Ramakrishna Paramahansa, the Guru of Swami Vivekananda, went to heaven on 16 August 1886.  Whose worship is still performed in the Kali temple of Calcutta as a great devotee and saint.  There is a Vivekananda temple on an island in Kanyakumari.  Vivekananda traveled all over India to spread his message of truth.  During this time he came to be known as 'Saints Saints'.


 When and why did Swami Vivekananda visit America ?


 Swami Vivekananda went to attend the Dharma Sansad held in Chicago (USA) on 11 September 1893, where he gave a very beautiful and popular speech which is still immortal till date.  As a representative of Hinduism, Vivekananda attended the Dharma-Parliament held in Shikango.  There, he addressed the audience as 'Dear brothers and sisters ....'

 His address captivated the audience completely.  Many Americans became his disciples.  One of them, an American disciple named Noble, became famous as 'Sister Nivedita'.  Vivekananda founded 'Belur-Math' and 'Ramakrishna Mission'.  In San Francisco he founded the 'Vedanta Society'.

 He wrote many books.  His books teach humanity.  Who not only in the country but also in the western countries, made the indigenous citizens their disciples.  Influenced by them, many foreign Hindu religions adopted.


 When did Swami Vivekananda die ?


 On 4 July 1902, Swami Vivekananda went to heaven.
